The Final Friday of January brings Linda Robinson to Tangent Lab for a showing of her large-scale photographic works. Launching a new year of exhibits for the gallery, Linda's work is very personal and symbolically explores the past as it relates to the present. Make plans now to attend the exhibit a week from this Friday!
Show Information:
Clutching her coat in the cold caused photographer Linda Robinson to think, “I have become my mother.” The gesture had reminded her of a picture of her mother clutching her coat in the same way. Upon examining the picture, Robinson realized, not only was it a picture of her mother at the same age Linda is now, it was her who had taken the photograph. “I was three when my mother handed me a Kodak Instamatic camera.”
The experience prompted Robinson to revisit her early photographs and the idea for the exhibition Thirty-Five Years came together. The show features actual snapshots of her home from the 1970’s, as well as her current symbolic reinterpretations of home and domesticity in fabric photographs. Robinson is interested in the act of reanimating the early photographs, bringing attention to the dichotomy of the past in reference to the present. Her new work examines a return to the integrity of the photograph as a device to document life, obviously read in her childhood snapshots. “Bringing new life to my earliest photographs brings attention to how specifically the past has and still remains to inform my work.”
Linda K. Robinson is currently Assistant Professor of Photography in the School of Art and Design at Wichita State University where she is the head of the photography department. Robinson's education includes a Master of Fine Art Degree in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has been working with conceptually based art within the medium of photography and inter-media, and is consistently moving her studio practice forward to coincide with the pulse of contemporary art.
Robinson's work has been included in several national and international exhibitions and publications. Currently her work is represented online at www.bowieart.com of London, England, and is represented at Dolphin Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri. You can view more of her work at www.lindakrobinson.com. She can be reached at 721-2336.
